September 23, 2024Book challenges have been happening at libraires nationwide at an increasing rate over the last several years. While current Iowa law places content-based age restrictions on books available in K-12 school libraries (not public libraries), libraries of all types have the option of supporting the national event named Banned Books Week to bring further awareness to book challenges and the impacts of censorship. The Van Meter Public Library, along with libraries across the metro, state and nation, has shared information annually regarding Banned Books Week and events related to the week which “spotlight current and historical attempts to censor books in libraires and schools.” – American Library Association “Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. By focusing on efforts to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Typically (but not always) held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.” – American Library Association (www.ala.org/bbooks/banned)The Van Meter Public Library has not taken any action to ban books. Van Meter Public Library staff has not stated that the City’s public library has taken any action to ban books. The City of Van Meter staff and Van Meter Public Library staff are aware that Iowa Senate File 496 relates to rules and regulations regarding to specific activities within school districts. Any posts relating to the 2024 Banned Books Week are for informational purposes only and in support of a nationwide event celebrating the freedom to read. ... See MoreSee Less
